Surfing
With 755 miles of coastline on two oceans, Costa Rica has an idyllic selection of surf complemented by comfortable water temperatures and beautiful scenery. The North Pacific coast is lined with a variety of favored surfing spots including Guanacaste, PotreroGrand, Playa Naranjo, Playa Grande, Tamarindo, Playa Langosta, Avellanas, Playa Negro and Nosaro. From Alegrķa, the two closest surfing areas are Flamingo Beach and Tamarindo. Of course, Witch’s Rock is said to have the most famous breaks, with off shore winds creating the mega waves surfers live for. Playa Naranjo is your closest beach to Witch’s Rock.

Diving or Snorkeling
A 60-80 foot dive at Catalina Island, directly off Flamingo, puts you in front of white-tipped sharks, giant manta rays, hammerhead sharks and sailfish. The diving is excellent any time of year.

Various dive shops serve Tamarindo and Flamingo. Aquacenter Diving,
(www.aquacenterdiving.com) is very conveniently located to serve the area,
as well as the Aqua Rica dive shop in Tamarindo.

In nearby Playa Hermosa, Diving Safaris also offer a full plate of PADI and NAUI courses, including NITROX. Or try your hand at underwater photography or a shark diving course, they also rent jet skis and sea kayaks.

White Water Rafting
Costa Rica’s mountainous topography is responsible for one of the best white water river rafting in the world. It’s the reason several Olympic kayaking teams train here, and why tens of thousands of visitors choose it to experience rafting for the first time. About a half of a dozen rivers are regularly run by outfitters and all of them pass through spectacular scenery. One of the most challenging is Rio Savegre, while more moderate Rio Coribici allows you to float with a rare view of rain forests and spectacular bird watching. The closest rafting to Alegrķa is Naranjo, a Class III-IV.

Wind Surfing
The Trade winds blow across Costa Rica with incredible force and consistency, creating ideal windsurfing conditions in the northwest part of the country. The eastern end of Lake Arenal is one of the world’s premier windsurfing spots, having been compared to Italy’s Lake Garda and the Columbia River George. During the dry season, the wind speed averages 33 miles an hour, a velocity that only experienced windsurfers can handle.  As the gale increases, the lake’s surface becomes choppy, and expert surfers use the waves to jump high and catch big air.
