Sport Fishing.
The country’s Pacific sports and beach resorts provide access to some of the best deep-sea fishing in the world. Billfish are the big attraction, but the Wahoo and roosterfish are no slouches either.
Offshore billfishing is spectacular from the Bat Islands near Nicaragua to the southern tip of Nicoya, not far from Alegrķa. The prime fishing season is December – May, but you can catch fish year-round at Nicoya due to the many species of baitfish.
Fishing boats are available out of Flamingo, Tamarindo, Nosara, Jaco (Los Suenos Marina), Quepos, Drake's Bay, and Golfito. Boat prices may vary depending on season, boat size, and number in your party.
Guanacaste Fishing
The Gulf of Papagayo is known for great inshore and offshore fishing, because many migratory species favor this area. You’re likely to encounter marlin, sail, dolphin, rooster, and by seasons, yellow fin tuna, Wahoo and others. If bottom fishing is your pleasure, this is the perfect place to land a grouper, big cubera snapper, amberjack, and red snapper.
Fishing Etiquette
Costa Ricans practice catch and release fishing conservation for all billfishing species like marlin, sailfish, swordfish, and rooster. With other species of fish you can keep as much as you and your party can eat. Fish like dorado and tuna make a tasty meal.
